There is one ancient Sumerian legend where the gods saw that people had become too smart and active, and frightened that people would become like them, the gods sent wars, diseases and other troubles on people. Later this legend was retold in the Bible as the legend of the Tower of Babel where the god inexplicably referring to himself in the plural decided to descend to earth and mix all languages. It is not known whether this was a specific tower, but the first towers were Sumerian stepped ziggurats. Here is an interpretation of this legend in sci fi cyberpunk style as if it happens in the future and the gods are aliens. They operate remotely here.
